The City Council of Genoa has awarded Rizzani de Eccher with the exclusive right to recover, renovate and manage the city’s former Fruit & Vegetable Market. The prime area, located in Corso Sardegna, in the heart of the historical St. Fruttuoso quarter, is to be redeveloped with a complex project financing scheme.
The site spans an area of 23,800 m2 adjacent to the St. Agata Convent. While the recovery intervention calls for the preservation and restoration of historical buildings overlooking Corso Sardegna, the remaining structures are to be demolished to make room for new mixed-use facilities.
Overall, the project will consist of 28.000 m2 underground parking, designed to accommodate 800 cars, and of 33.000 m2 above-ground structures intended to accommodate a Municipal Police precinct, a multi-purpose function room seating 200, two nurseries, a youth community centre, a first aid facility complete with ambulance bay, a social community centre, a sports hall, the Bassa Val Bisagno diagnostic centre, a university dormitory for 230 students, as well as commercial units, which include average retail space of 1,000 sqm, and finally a residential building comprising of approximately 40 units. Construction works will commence in Spring 2010 and are expected to last 36 months.
